INFORMATION OVERLOAD: How To Stop Feeling Overwhelmed

One topic I would like to discuss today is information overload. Nowadays, with social media and constant access to news, we can find it very difficult to focus. This is the result of what is called information overload.

Information overload is defined as “the exposure to or provision of too much information or data.”

Information and knowledge is available at the press of a button and the moment a major event happens in the world, the entire world has full access to the news within seconds.

Having access can be a good thing but having too much can be a huge problem and can effect your productivity in a bad way. When you learn how to conquer this problem you’d be amazed at how much your productivity will improve.

So, let’s get into it.

Here are 3 Major Causes of Information Overload and 3 Solutions:

Cause #1: News & Advertisements

News and advertisements are everywhere. They are practically unavoidable. The sad part is, most of them are bad for us. Everyday we are bombarded with stories about murders or ads for fast foods that cause cancer and heart disease. On the contrary, rarely, do we ever get exposed to positive stories or content.

Psychology Professor Daniel Levitin, from McGill University brings up an interesting point regarding this topic:

In 1976 there were 9,000 products in the average grocery store, and now it’s ballooned to 40,000 products. And yet most of us can get almost all of our shopping done in just 150 items, so you’re having to ignore tens of thousands of times every time you go shopping.

Professor Levitin’s statements are quite shocking but are the unfortunate truth. This shows us how much distraction we have to overcome each day.

From the moment we wake up and turn on our TVs and phones we are swamped with advertisements and negative news headlines. Once we walk out of the door the subways are flooded with these same advertisements.

Solution: Tune Out the Noise

Make an effort to not watch the news in the morning or check social media. There are apps to check for commute times and the weather. Starting your day on a positive note is crucial to having solid and productive days. By avoiding the TV and smartphone you won’t be exposed to the attention grabbing morning headlines that the media uses to reel you in to their junk.

Instead spend your waking hours and commute focusing on positive things. Read a self-help, read the bible, listen to an audio book, or listen to some positive uplifting music. Do anything that will keep your attention away from the things the media wants you to have your attention on. Trust me, your thinking will become a lot clearer. This helped me tremendously.

Cause #2: Social Media

Social media has dramatically changed the way society operates. There was once a time when America wouldn’t hear about something that happened in China for 1 or 2 days. Now, with Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and various other platforms, news spreads globally in seconds. Inherently, this is not a bad thing, but it can be when social media is used incorrectly.

MINDLESSLY looking through our social media timelines is bad. Throughout the day they are loaded with the newest viral video or article about a gory killing, celebrity scandal, or political issue. As you consume all of this negative information, it will take a toll on you mentally and eventually YOU TOO will begin to feel negative. This will leak in to different areas of your life and massive amounts of time will get wasted.

According to one study, Americans check their social media accounts at least 17 times and day and spend on average 4.7 hours per day on their phones!

It’s no wonder many of us feel overwhelmed and as if there is not enough time in the day.

Solution: Monitor Your Social Media Usage (2 Steps)

Step 1: Create TIME BLOCKS

Set aside a specific time in the day that you will dedicate to social media usage. This will help you avoid wasting precious hours.

Step 2: Implement ‘Conscious Social Media Usage’

Control your usage by planning what exactly it is you will be logging in to do and sticking to it, no excuses.

For example: “when I log into Facebook I’m going to post a picture, check my girlfriend’s and dad’s pages, and respond to messages in my inbox and wall.”

By doing this, you will have a plan of action and be less prone to falling for click bait or getting mindlessly distracted by the random posts of other people. The control will be back in your hands and you won’t find yourself mindlessly wandering.

Cause #3: Other People

No way. Did he really just say that? Yes, I did. People can be a distraction and do contribute to information overload.

Have you ever had a conversation with a co-worker or friend and they were complaining to you. Maybe they were complaining about politics, about their problems, or just complaining about everything.

I’m sure after a while their complaining began to impact YOUR mood and you started to feel a bit less enthusiastic about life. Maybe even feeling a bit negative yourself.

This is very common and is a huge problem.

Generally speaking, people in society are negative. Most people look at the negative side of things and then chose to spew their beliefs out on others.

There was once a time when people could only do this to you in person. But now with social media in the picture they can spread their negative energy throughout the entire planet. Everyday you get to wake up and see what negative thing Sally has to say today on your timeline.

Plus, not only do you get to hear about Sally’s problems, but now you also get to hear about stranger’s problems too!

This can be a bad issue.

With so many people spurting their negativity out at you from different directions, it is tough to remain optimistic which is a crucial trait to functioning at a high level of success. Over time, bearing the problems of the world will take a toll on your mental state and hamper your productivity.

Solution: Stop Being the Garbage Dump

While these people my be your friends and even your family. It is important to establish proper boundaries when it comes to tolerating their complaints. There’s nothing wrong with talking to people about their problems constructively or supporting a friend during a tough time but if it is coming from a place of being a victim, whining, or complaining, it is not conducive for either one of you.

If someone chooses to vent to you every time they see you, just simply tell them you don’t want to hear their negativity all the time because it ruins your mood and if that doesn’t work then you simply have to distance yourself from that person for your own protection.

When it comes to social media, what I like to do, when applicable, is to control whose posts I can see on my timeline. That way I won’t see posts from people that always share negative content. On certain sites, like instagram, where I don’t have that option I just delete the person entirely, no matter who they are.

By making the choice to stop being people’s garbage dumpster you will have clearer thinking, you will feel more positive, and you won’t suffer from information overload.

I failed to listen to my conscious for a while and I had to learn the hard way. I worked in a finance career and the sky was the limit. I could have made all the money in the world. But it was not my passion. I was miserable. I was only doing it for the money. Big mistake. So I took a leap of faith and left that career so I could instead help people and focus on my own passions and pursuits. Now, everyday I wake up I have a fuel that lights a fire within my soul and gets my day going.

When you do what you love. You will wake up and a fire will be running through your soul too. You’ll be excited to “work,” because you will be carrying out your purpose and working towards your legacy.

Anybody who is massively successful did not have to find success, success found them because they were busy chasing their passion.

Examples include: Bill Gates, loves computers. Michael Jordan, loves basketball. Warren Buffet, loves money. Michael Jackson, loves music. Donald Trump, love business. Jesus, loves you.

Now that you have found what you love to do, it is time to commit to taking massive action. This doesn’t mean to merely say you are going to do something; it means to DO IT. 1. Avoid Multi-Tasking

Humans Cannot Multi-Task and operate at their highest.

Avoid multi-tasking like the plague. Scientific studies prove that humans can only focus on one activity at a time. Only one activity can get your FULL attention.

For example, if you read a book while watching TV, you will find yourself either missing out on a scene or forgetting a line you just read. This is because we can’t keep up with a TV show while reading a book, only one of these can have your undivided attention in a given moment.

When completing important tasks always focus on doing one thing at a time. Not only will you get tasks done faster, but you will finish them at a much higher quality than you would have if you were distracted.

2. Eliminate Distractions

Eliminate wasting time and energy on things that do not serve you or your goals.

Without a plan you will find that you will not get tasks done in a timely matter and you will struggle with procrastination.

So how do you create an effective plan that gives you laser focus?

For example, you can say: in 10 years I want to own my first house, make $300,000 per year, and travel to Hong Kong. This is a specific goal. What you don’t want to say is: in 10 years I want to be rich; this is too vague, lacks a sense of direction, and gives your subconscious mind nothing to grasp.

One of the first things we are taught is to work for money. This is not entirely true because money can actually work for you. Many people have only one source of income. This not good because when they lose that source of income they are broke. The key is to create several streams of income. The more money you can make the more money you’ll have to put to work for you. Then, one day you can make money while sitting on a beach.

Here are 2 steps to Make Money Work for you:

1. Generate Streams of Income

Develop more than one income streams and then diversify them. If you have no income, you can’t survive or make more money. So first get a stream of income (for example: a job). Nowadays you can start a business online for free, so this is an option. Your end goal should be to be able to pay bills and still have savings remaining.

2. Make Investments and Generate Passive Income 

Once you have savings start to invest your money. Some good investments to make are in the stock market, bond market, real estate, foreign exchange, and hard assets that appreciate in value. Don’t put all your marbles in one basket, aim to invest in as many different places as possible. By diversifying you will be protected by the income of your other investments in case one of these sectors performs poorly (example: stock market crashes). As you generate passive income from your investments, you’ll be making money without having to work.

Adopt Healthy Eating Habits

The average diet consists of pizza, white bread, fruit juices, cookies, french fries, and processed meat. These foods contain high amounts of sugar, unhealthy fats, sodium (salt) and carbohydrates. Consuming too much food is scientifically proven to cause heart attacks, cardiovascular, problems, diabetes, and even cancer. Food is fuel to the body. When we fill our bodies with bad fuel, we set ourselves up for failure.

Replace junk food with fruits, vegetables, whole grain foods, and unprocessed organic meats. You will see a huge spike in energy and mood. Eating healthier has been proven scientifically to make skin healthier. This will enhance those good looks ;).

Go To The Gym

You don’t have to be a body builder but make the time to go for a run. Do some weightlifting. Going to gym and jogging at least 3 times a week is sufficient to good health and physique.

Tony Robbins asked this rhetorical question at one of his seminars, and I loved it: “why is it that we all know the things we must do, and yet we don’t do them?” Quite an interesting question. But it warrants our attention, and makes a powerful point. So, why is it that we procrastinate?

Procrastination was a problem that frustrated me. I researched countless hours, watched countless videos, and studied hundreds of millionaires, and I finally found the solutions to overcome this very annoying obstacle. Now I don’t struggle with procrastination the same way I used to and in this article, I will give you a surefire guide that will help you to overcome procrastination too. I will discuss 4 causes of procrastination and show you what I learned to fix all of them.

Why We Procrastinate

Before learning how to end procrastination, first we need learn WHY we procrastinate. If we don’t know why we do something, we set ourselves to go into a battle with blinders on.

According to experts who study procrastination, and based off of my own personal experiences, these are some of the top reasons why people procrastinate.

1. Lack of a plan

This is critical. Have you ever felt overwhelmed? Do you ever feel like there isn’t enough time in the day to get everything done? Have you ever felt burned out, yet making no significant progress towards completing a task? If you are like me, and most other people, then you have suffered from a lack of a plan. When you have no plan of action, you end up feeling like you have done a lot of work because you do a little bit of everything, but in actuality you realize nothing ever gets done.

Solution: The Time Block Schedule

It is essential to create a concise plan of action. Put some time aside, and first write down a list of all tasks in your life that must be completed (put the most important activities at the top of the list and lowest ones on the bottom). Then, chose a specific day and time to commit to doing each task.

Here is an example of how a time block schedule should look. You can customize this to fit however works best for you.

Saturday

7AM-8AM: Wake Up/Shower/Breakfast       8AM-9AM: Gym       9:15AM-9:30AM: Shower

9:30- 10AM: Walk the dog       10-11AM: Work on Business          11-12PM: Read

12PM-12:30PM: Lunch/Relax         12:30PM-1:30PM: Housework      1:30-3:00PM: Shopping

3:30PM-4:00: Relax       4PM-5PM- Study for test       5PM-6PM: Free Block (Free Time)

6PM-11PM: Date night with wife/fun with friends

When you implement this you will look back and notice that your, productivity has sky rocketed. You will be getting a lot done, and thoroughly. BUT, it is imperative to stick to your time block schedule like glue this like glue, don’t cheat, and stay focused on whatever you committed to doing at that time. Do this and you will be golden, it will give you confidence knowing you have a plan and direction in place and you won’t have scatterbrain anymore.

2. Telling Yourself You’ll Do It Later

This may sound like an oxymoron, but it is a huge reason for procrastination, and it’s called justification. How many times have you heard someone say this? I’ll quit smoking cigarettes after my last one tonight. Does that ever work? In most cases, no, it fails almost always.

When something needs to get done, we tend to justify why we will procrastinate for “only” one more day.

Solution: The No Justification Rule

When we stop justifying, and simply act. The procrastination stops. Nike says it best: “Just Do It.” Super cliche, but on point. The more we can get into the habit of just doing things right now, literally, the more that will get done. Make a rule to yourself that you will start acting either fast, or immediately. No exceptions, when you make exceptions, that’s when the door to procrastination opens again.

As you see improvement, you will gain confidence and continue to see more and more slow and steady progress. However, I won’t sugarcoat this, you may fail in the beginning, several times, but continue saying this rule to yourself and ingraining it in your head, and overtime you will become a master.

Just don’t beat yourself up if you mess up a few times. It happens. Just keep going.

3. Low Confidence

This is a big one and extremely important to conquer. If you allow someone or something to crush your confidence and effect your self-esteem, you will begin to hesitate and have doubts which will slow down your progress. This has happened to me before, here’s a story. Once I came up with the goal to someday start my own law firm. I immediately began to study endlessly for my LSAT and did so almost everyday. I remember being more motivated than ever. Then, one day someone told me I was crazy for wanting to start my own firm and that it was an unrealistic goal. When I heard that, I started doubting myself. I’d ask myself,”Is he right?”.This questioning led to my study habits slowing down.I allowed him to burst my confidence bubble. Moral of the story, don’t let anyone break your confidence. Believe in yourself.

The Solution: Track Your Victories

To overcome this issue, you have to learn how confidence momentum works. Successful people taught me to start tracking small victories. This has helped me tremendously. Confidence builds off of momentum. So in order to overcome your procrastination, you simply have to keep a mental note of every time you succeeded at not procrastinating. Keep track of everyday you stuck to your schedule and completed your tasks.

Track your victories  this along with not allowing other people’s opinions to influence you and watch how your productivity improves. As you see that you can obtain smaller accomplishments you will feel good about yourself and your confidence will grow more slowly and you will be more confident.

4. Lack of Interest/Lack of Excitement

Another huge reason why people procrastinate is because they aren’t interested in the task. Either it’s too boring or the activity is very rigorous and requires hard work. Either way, this is a problem especially if the task must be done.

Solution: Make The Bigger Picture Smaller

To fix this problem there are two options. Either you can eliminate the task that you don’t enjoy, or, if it’s something that can’t be avoided, simply split up the task into a smaller series of goals that can be completed.

Oftentimes, when we need to get something done that is difficult or boring, all we see is a huge mountain that needs to be climbed and is full of inconveniences. However, when you split a task into small steps that are easy to complete, suddenly it doesn’t seem so mundane, drawn out, or difficult anymore which results in making the task more doable.

Conclusion

Procrastination is a problem that many of us have struggled with at one time or another. By understanding the reasons you procrastinate you will be able to overcome it, and it is very possible. Create a time block schedule, stop justification, track your victories, and make the bigger picture smaller, and your procrastination should be no more.

I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to be around many stars from all walks of life such as professional sports, entertainment, and the corporate world and I’ve spent countless amounts of time learning and observing the habits that make these people so successful. 1. They are extremely disciplined

Successful people are hardcore and know when it is time to get down to business. You may see the parties, fun, flashy cars, and vacations on their instagram pages, but you better believe that these people hustle and they hustle CONSISTENTLY.

Tell me how often this happens to you, because it happens to me ALL OF THE TIME. How many times do you come up with an idea and decide that you will start acting on it the next day. The difference between an average person, a below average person, and someone who is great, is that the great person works on mastering his craft EVERYDAY. When you only work on your craft one day out of seven, you are setting yourself up to fail against someone who is working on that same craft six days out of seven.

My recommendation to you is to first figure out what your goals are. Next, prioritize which activities most urgently need to be completed. Then, divide your day into time blocks and fill each block up with the activities that are highest on your priority list. Make sure to include leisurley hobbies as well, such as spending time with family or hanging out with friends. One thing I like to do is set aside some blocks and allocate that time to what I call my “chill time.” It’s very important to live a little and watch a ball game or go beat up your girl or something (play fighting, for all of you wise ones). If you are having trouble finding some time to wind down, you’re doing too much and you need to rebalance your priorities and allocate your activities differently, if you look hard enough there is something that can wait until later. Either delegate the activity to some else or eliminate it from your block entirely. Finally, it is best to schedule activities around the same time each day. For example: GYM @ 7AM on Mon, Tues, and Weds.

Make a regimen, stick to it like your life depends on it, no excuses, stuff will get done, and then you can thank me later.

2. They Are Extremely Optimistic 

I can’t begin to tell you how important this is. Almost any successful person I’ve ever met is very POSITIVE. Not only are they positive, but they hate negativity. They steer away from negative people and situations like they are running from the plaque. Quite literally, they run away from the stuff, and you should too.

I’ll be the first to admit that life is not always sunshine and rainbows, but this is precisely why you must be optimistic. Because when something doesn’t go according to plan, and it will, only positive thinking and action will get you back on track.

There are even scientific studies that show that our brains are primed to respond to positivity in a way that reinforces positivity. In simpler terms, our brains reward us for positive thinking by providing more positive thought patterns and guiding us towards happiness. It is much easier to take over the world when you are feeling happy, plus people will like you more. Nobody likes to be around someone who complains all the time and sucks all of the good vibes out a room.

Be positive through good times, through the bad times, and you will be immensely rewarded.

3.  They Are Avid Readers

Great entreprenuers and successful people all read, A LOT. As cliche as this may sound, the saying, “read to achieve,” is spot on. In order to achieve, one must truly learn to master this craft because by reading you will learn and be better equipped to handle any obstacles you may face in your journey.

There is no way anyone can achieve high levels of success without the proper knowledge. Period. Mastering your craft requires taking the time to educate yourself. Successful people know this and they gobble up knowledge like there is no tomorrow. Knowledge is power, I can’t emphasize this enough, the benefits are endless. It will educate you, make you a better writer, speaker, and also make you an overall more interesting person to converse with.

I always like to say, “read a book, and you read someones entire life.” Essentially, by reading a book you get to read someone’s whole life experience. Therefore, if the author is 60 or 70 years old, this means that you have the opportunity to learn something that took them 60 years to learn in only a span of a couple of days. That is a powerful asset.

We all know that the Lord has told us “my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). Pick up a book and read it and you will be successful.

4. They Learn From Their Mistakes, and Apply

Want to see results, and see results fast? Do this. I guarantee you, your productivity will sky rocket.

I’m sure you hear this often: ‘learn from your mistakes.’ But people always seem to leave out the APPLY part. This is what successful people and entrepreneurs do, and do it well. I learned this, and believe me it works. It’s critical.

Many people go through life making the same mistakes over and over again. Sure they may “learn” from their mistakes. But the problem is, they never DO anything about it. When you make a mistake you have to lick your wounds, learn the lesson, and then APPLY the lesson you learned IMMEDIATELY. Do not hesitate. The faster you can learn and apply, the more productive you will become and the faster you will attain your goal. This advice is golden.

Here is an exercise:

Apply any lesson you have learned starting RIGHT NOW, this second, and never look back. Don’t wait. Do this everyday. There will be a change in your level of productivity.

5. They Look the Part

This one is a no brainer. Look at the superstar in your office, on the field, or on the stage and you will see a common trend. People who achieve high level success are usually dressed sharp as a tack.

Sure, there are always exceptions to every rule, but I can guarantee you a majority of successful people are very well dressed and have good hygiene. Your appearance is literally the first thing people see when meeting you for the first time and we live in a society that WILL judge you based on how you are dressed. So, if you are slacking (no pun intended) in this department you are putting yourself at a huge disadvantage, my friend.

Food for thought, it is common knowledge that any successful business person makes money, and to make money, at some point you will have to ask someone else to give you THEIR money in exchange for your service or product. Which of these gentlemen would you feel more comfortable forking over that hard earned money to? The guy on the left or the guy on the right?

The guy on the right, hands down. You don’t have to be America’s Next Top Model but do you yourself a favor wear clothes that fit, take a shower, and clip your nails. You’ll feel good and you’ll do great.

 

6. They Are Passionate

Countless times I have encountered people that have a very lucrative career but are absolutely miserable because they are not passionate about it. Successful people love what they do. When you love what you do, you will never feel like you are working another day in your life. Things will begin to flow and you’ll find yourself feeling happier.

Passion is the fire that light’s the mega successful’s candle. It can seem like they can endlessly work on their craft, because to successful people it is not work. If you try putting your full effort into a job a career you hate, you will eventually burn out and become very frustrated.

If you are in a career or field that you do not love, I would recommend finding a way to transition into a path that gets your blood rushing. It will be the best decision you make in your life and one that will give you a nice return on investment.

7. They Are Obsessed 

If you want to amass a large amount of success, money, and freedom in this life, this may potentially be the most important piece of advice in existence. To win, to truly win, you must aim dominate your field. Every successful athlete, entrepreneur, lawyer, stockbroker, or celebrity, is obsessed with operating at their optimum level and they then apply MASSIVE ACTION to their purpose.

There are BILLIONS of people on the planet who all would like to have money, freedom, and success. In order to rise to the cream of the crop, it is absolutely imperative to dominate your field. Successful people understand this and they are willing invest MASSIVE ACTION into each and every single day to achieve those goals.

Kobe Bryant took 1,000 shots a day, Donald Trump said he goes sleepless on some nights when working on a deal, I once heard of a law student at the top of his class at a very reputable law school that was known to spend 10 hours EVERYDAY in the library. That’s some RIDICULOUS work ethic.

Don’t be afraid to go all in and pursue your goals with all of your heart, you only live once, after all. Make it count.

8. They Are Willing To Adapt

This is a crucial skill and one that you must be aware of regardless of what field you are in or you will be oblitherated. Successful people are constantly with the times. They understand that they don’t have to change everything about their operation, but they are open and willing to adapt and update areas of their careers that may expose their business to downside risk due to the new trends and technology engulfing society. People that have too much pride and a “stick with my guns” attitude can really suffer great consequences if they refuse to acknowledge the changes taking place around the globe and get caught in their ways.

The world is changing everyday and technological advances are constantly being rolled out to the masses, it has changed the world of business. Fortune 500 companies are run differently now than they were 30 years ago. The fortune 500 companies that understand this are still dominating the marketplace to this day, the ones that did not are no longer in existence. It’s that simple, if you don’t advance with the times, you will be left behind.

I would highly recommend investing the time to educate yourself about the new technologies and advances that are changing and evolving your field. If you’re an entrepreneur, learn about marketing, as that is an area that has been drastically changed due to the social media phenomena. This will help you to avoid new advancements coming back to bite you and your wallet when you are least expecting it.

9. They Accept and Understand Both Their Strengths and Weaknesses 

Robert Herjavec, a mogul that built a $200 million dollar business empire and well known for his appearance on NBC’s ‘Shark Tank,’ once talked about what makes him successful and what he said has always stuck out to me. He said, “what makes me successful is that I understand what I am good at and what I am bad at…always focus only on what you are good at because if you to try to beat someone at something you are bad at, there will always be someone out there who is good at that thing, and he will eat your lunch each and every single time”

Don’t let someone else eat your lunch.

Successful people understand that they are not good at everything, and they accept it. Put you energy and effort in to things that you are talented at naturally and your chances of achieving at a high level are much better. If you try to play on somebody else’s turf you will lose every time.

Stay in your lane.

10. They Know How to Relax

This one is my favorite–vacation. Almost all highly successful people that I have learned from all know when it is time to take some time off and recharge the batteries.

When you work hard and pound the pavement day in and out, it is so important to reward yourself with a vacation or at the very least take a break from time to time. Going out with some buddies, spending time with family, going on adventures, or taking an unforgettable vacation somewhere will pay it’s dividends to both you and your dreams. It will give you time to reflect and to come up with new ideas for your career or business.

Sometimes our best ideas come when we are in a state of relaxation and fun.

Learn to lighten up, take a deep breath, and be thankful for the simple things. After all, what’s the point of working so hard if you don’t get to enjoy all your accomplishments?

Become A Master

These are just a handful of people who have amassed massive amounts of wealth in their lifetimes and have attributed their successes to their insane work habits. These people HUSTLE and they HUSTLE HARD.  To be successful in this world you have to make a decision today. COMMIT to something and MASTER IT or be average.

Whether you are a singer, writer, lawyer, entrepreneur, doctor, or taxi driver; you have to learn about your craft and master it if you want to be very successful. Celebrities and greats at the top from all different professional fields all understand that they have to DOMINATE their space to stand out and be noticed or they will be lost in the crowd and forgotten about, or worse, never known.

We can make all the excuses in the world. ‘It’s too hard’ or ‘I just don’t have the time.’ At the end of the day, you have to MAKE  it happen.
